If you’ve ever tried to play a video online and suddenly saw this message:

“The media playback was aborted due to a corruption problem or because the media used features your browser did not support.”

—don’t worry, you’re not alone. This is a fairly common issue that can happen for several reasons.

Common causes of this error

  • Browser incompatibility or temporary glitches
  • Poor or unstable internet connection
  • Website plugins not supported by your browser
  • Cached data or cookies interfering with playback
  • The video file itself is corrupted or uses unsupported formats

Quick fixes to try first

Regardless of whether you’re using Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or another browser, start with these basic steps:

  1. Refresh the webpage
  2. Open the video in a different browser
  3. Check your internet connection
  4. Clear cookies, cache, and browsing history
  5. Disable all browser plugins/extensions
  6. Restart your browser

In many cases, one of these steps will solve the problem quickly.

When the issue is deeper

If the quick fixes don’t help, the problem is likely with the video stream itself.

For example, when copying the stream link into VLC, the file may open fine, but in Google Chrome you might still see:

ERROR: (CODE:3 MEDIA_ERR_DECODE) The media playback was aborted due to a corruption problem or because the media used features your browser did not support.

In such cases, the issue is often with the audio codec. VLC may show the stream using ADTS, but most browsers only support AAC or MP3 audio formats.

How to fix it properly

To avoid playback errors across browsers:

  • Make sure your videos are encoded with browser-friendly codecs (H.264 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio).
  • Re-encode problematic files before uploading or streaming.
  • Double-check your media server settings to ensure compatibility.

  1. The error message you’re encountering, “The media playback was aborted due to a corruption problem or because the media used features your browser did not support,” typically suggests a couple of potential issues:

1-File Corruption: The video file might be corrupted. Try playing other videos on the same platform or application to see if the issue persists. If it’s just one specific video that fails to play, it could indeed be corrupted.

2-Unsupported Codecs: The video may use codecs that are not supported by your browser. This is common with newer or less common video formats. You can try updating your browser to the latest version to see if it adds support for the codec, or you could try playing the video in a different browser or a dedicated media player that supports a wider range of codecs.

3-Browser Issues: Sometimes, browser plugins or extensions can interfere with media playback. Try disabling extensions, particularly those related to ad-blocking or media management, and see if the video plays. Alternatively, you can open your browser in incognito mode (which typically disables most extensions) and attempt to play the video.

4-Network Issues: A poor or unstable internet connection can also cause this error. Ensure your network connection is stable and strong enough to stream video content.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, converting the video file to a different format that is known to be compatible with your browser might help. If you need assistance with video file conversion or any other technical details, let me know!

  3. I don’t know if this is the issue for everyone, but it seems to have been for me. I could not play any video on either Acorn of BritBox, a problem that had never happened before, and only began today.

I logged out and back in, and it didn’t help. I closed and restarted the browser, and it didn’t help. I disabled plugins, and it didn’t help.

I finally clicked on the “Play from start” icon, and got a second message that told me that some audio codex was not loading. I only know one way to restart the audio codices, and that’s to reboot.

So what you do is shut down your computer. Do not just restart — shut it down. Be sure everything is off, especially the power light. Let it sit for about 90 seconds, then restart.

It worked for me. Acorn is playing again.

  4. Im seeing a lot of this SAME ISSUE, by many people.
